Named after William Shakespeare's famous tragic lovers, the Romeo y Julieta brand was established as a Habano in 1875.
It achieved international fame in the early 20th century under the guidance of Don "Pepin" Rodriguez, a talented promoter who was among the first to recognize the importance of cigar bands. At its peak, no fewer than 20,000 different bands were used in production.
Winston Churchill became a devoted fan of the brand. Following his visit to Havana in 1946, his name was not only immortalized on a band, but also gave its title to one of the most iconic formats in the range: the Romeo y Julieta Churchill.
The 21st century saw the emergence of two new formats bearing this name. In 2006, the Short Churchill was introduced, filling the absence of a robusto in the range. In 2010, at the 21st Festival del Habano, the Wide Churchill appeared, featuring a 55 ring gauge, thus catering to the enthusiasts' trend for vitolas with larger diameters.
The balanced and aromatic blend of filler and binder leaves selected from the Vuelta Abajo region makes Romeo y Julieta a benchmark medium-bodied Habano.
Today, Romeo y Julieta remains one of the best-known brands in the world and offers the widest range of long-filler formats among all Habano brands.
